SOHE MP Henry Amuli is calling on the Government to upgrade and maintain the Kokoda Highway as it is one of the key economic roads in Northern.
Amuli was at Kokoda on Friday to view the work being carried out to repair the approaches to the Iora Bridge washed away by the flood last month.
He said the highway was used by an oil palm plantation, an oil palm mill and an estate.
It also provides road access to people wanting to walk the Kokoda Track, plus the people of Kokoda and those living along the highway.
“It’s a very important road and I am calling on the Government to seriously look into the rehabilitation of the Kokoda Highway,” Amuli said.
He also urged the Works Department and contractors engaged in future road maintenance and construction work to consider the effects of climate change as part of their design and engineering standards.
