Andake not letting disability stop him

Education

Being deaf is no obstacle for Smith Andake who plans to pursue a university education in Australia.
Andake comes from the Lumusa local level government in Mul-Baiyer, Western Highlands, and plans to study mining engineering at Griffith University in Australia.
Even though he completed his grade 12 in 2004, Andake still has a dream to further his education.
Andake, who communicates through sign language and written speech, said he completed his studies with the Mt Hagen Callan Services inclusive sign language and attended high school and secondary schools through special arrangements.
He said he needs financial support because he believes that people living with disabilities can also help to develop the country.
Andake said he needs about K40,000 for his school fees.
“This is what I was planning because I see that education never has an end,” he said.
“I can make it through because I believe in myself that I can do it if I am able to raise K40,000.
“Nothing is impossible. It all depends on you and if we feel and have the confidence that we become a reality.”
He said he wrote a letter this year dated March 29, addressed to the office of Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti seeking financial assistance.
He is still waiting for a response.
Andake said he comes from a remote area which is close to the neighbouring Enga.
He decided to move to Mt Hagen to live with his relatives to find work and pay for his fees.
He said he will work hard to make sure he raises enough money to pay his school fees to realise his dream.
