Andrews not sure about stats
The National, Monday February 8th, 2016
Deputy Police Commissioner for Operations Jim Andrews has cast doubt on crime statistics indicating no rape and related sexual incidents committed in Hela last year.
“This cannot be true as Hela is a very volatile province and there are rape incidents committed there,” Andrews said.
“The problem is that victims are not reporting to the police because they are afraid that they might be attacked by the offenders.
“Or the victims are instead opting for compensation payment and not reporting the incidents.”
He was commenting national crime statistics released by police headquarters.
According to the figures there were no rape cases reported in Hela in 2015 and only one case reported in 2014.
Andrews also doubted that there were no rape statistics in 2015 in Gulf and New Ireland. However Gulf reported four in 2014 while NIP had six.
“There are such incidents committed in those provinces that are not being reported. And it is also an offence in the PNG Criminal Code if the victims are not reporting these incidents.”
