THE management and board of the Angau Memorial Hospital, in Lae, Morobe, are calling on people to appreciate and respect workers at the hospital and their property.
In a statement, the management said the same respect should apply to the tireless staff at health centres and clinics, who were often harassed, assaulted and intimidated at workplaces.
The appeal followed a report of a medical officer being confronted by criminals outside his home and his vehicle taken by the armed men.
The health worker had been called to duty to attend to survivors of the mv Rabaul Queen on Feb 2.
The hospital board and management said many people were becoming a nuisance to staff and did not appreciate the services provided by committed and tireless workers.
Similar harassment has been reported over the years and was becoming a great concern, the statement said.
“Health workers are here to help you when you’re sick and need treatment; vehicles are there to assist health workers’ mobility on duty to care for you.
“Hospital property is there for your health.
“Hospital staff and property must be cared for and respected,” the statement read.
The management condemned such attitude from the public and urged people to respect doctors, nurses, community health workers and support staff at hospitals, health centres and
clinics.
“Although health staff work tirelessly to make sure health care services are provided to the community, members of the public in return never appreciate and show respect to staff.”
The management and board said they would like to see greater respect and consideration shown to health workers and support staff.
