ANGLICARE PNG is presenting a grand opportunity to the illiterate to learn to read and write.
In partnership with the Revival Church, United Church, Morata literacy and the Anglicare parishes in Port Moresby, Anglicare PNG is providing an opportunity to those who had missed out to broaden their scope of knowledge in reading and writing.
The programme, under AusAID, is funded by the Australian Board of Mission which focuses on educating those from the age of 14 and above.
Adult literacy manager Bernard Paru said the programme had three levels.
Level one is for those that are completely illiterate, level two for those who can at least read one or two words and level three for Grade 6-8 dropouts.
Paru said moving to the next level would depend entirely on the performance.
“The programme also focuses on empowering women to have education as there should be equal education for male and female,” he said.
Paru said 163 were taking up the programme and the figure included 78 young people.
He said 28 teachers were currently under training on adult literacy and they had also established two new schools in the Central province.
The students are taught
basic English, maths and phonics, which was introduced last year.
