PAPUA New Guinea’s 2020 enhanced National Determined Contributions (NDC) focused on reducing greenhouse gases emissions in energy, forestry, agriculture and other land use change was launched in Port Moresby last Monday.
The NDC captured PNG’s adaptation action statutes and identified priority areas for future adaptation actions and support needs.
Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Wera Mori said it was another milestone in addressing climate change in the country and how PNG contributes to the global climate change commitment by responding to long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies and integrating adaptation actions within the mitigation infrastructures to enhance resilience.
As a party to the Paris agreement, PNG is guided by Article 4.2
which states that “each party shall prepare, communicate and maintain successive nationally determined contributions that it intends to achieve”.
“Parties shall pursue domestic mitigation measures, with the aim of achieving such contributions’ objectives.
“In Paris, we made a binding agreement to pursuing efforts to limit the global temperatures to 1.5 degree Celsius.”
