A CONVICTED prison escapee, who dashed for freedom at the Port Moresby General Hospital in 2008, was recaptured last Friday.
The 45-year-old Joseph Binape was recaptured at the 8-Mile settlement.
Binape escaped from the custody of Correctional Service officers at POMGH when he was transported from Bomana institute to POMGH on medical grounds.
NCD police Supt of Operations Sr Insp Andy Bawa last night confirmed Binape’s recapture as he thanked members of the public for being cooperative with police with information leading to the recapture.
Binape was convicted of wilful murder and was serving a life sentence when he escaped.
Meanwhile, Sr Insp Bawa said it was only a matter of time before the remaining eight escapes of the 12 prisoners who walked out from Bomana’s maximum security unit on Jan 12 would be rounded up together with the mysterious “human rights female lawyer”.
He appealed to the nine people to voluntarily surrender themselves either through to his office, office of NCD metropolitan commander Chief Supt Fred Yakasa, church leaders or community leaders if they feared for their lives.
