New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan was honoured to host a group of visitors from around Asia and the Pacific in Kavieng on Saturday.
Tourism Ministers and delegates of 16 economies were in Kavieng for a regional visit after the 10th Apec Tourism Ministers Meeting in Port Moresby last Friday.
“Having the Apec meetings in Papua New Guinea this year – and having you visit New Ireland – feels like a real sign of the maturing of Papua New Guinea,” Sir Julius said.
“But I hope that, even with the depth of experience in visiting fascinating places in the world that you collectively have, you will find that today you are in a special place. I think the simplest way to put it is this: New Ireland is real; New Ireland is Authentic. This is no tourist show.
“We would like to share what we have and what we are, with others interested in seeing New Ireland.
“What we want is for you to take back to your countries a simple message. We would welcome people who want to see the real world,” Sir Julius told the guests.
“We want people who will go to the village and stay at a guesthouse, eat local food with local people, go walking, mountain climbing, swimming, snorkelling and fishing,” he said.
“So I hope you take back the message to your friends and your countries that New Ireland is ready to welcome them. Not with nightclubs that stay open until two or three in the morning, but a place where life can be enjoyed, more satisfying.”
