THE PNG basketball men’s development side are appealing to business houses in PNG to assist them compete in the Far North Queensland Cairns challenge set for Jan 22-24.
It is an official invitational tournament from the Cairns Basketball Federation to see PNG All Stars play in a series of exhibition matches which will include a City vs Country challenge and other matches for the PNG side.
The squad need K15,000 sponsorship to travel to Australia for the event which will help up-and-coming PNG  players prepare for national and international events.
“We need K15,000 to compete in Cairns. The boys have already raised some money after successfully hosting the three-on-three competition at the Ela Beach basketball courts.
“Another competition will be held on Sunday. The event was put off because of the New Year break,” coordinator Lawrence Lahari said.
He added the event was also deferred to give bemobile the opportunity to repair the mini-stand that was damaged.
Lahari said the squad had been in intensive training for the last six weeks at the Ela Beach Basketball Courts.
The team, made up of young and experience players, are Lahari, Peter Davani, Wally Parapa, Lei Banduru, Sibona Kala, Steven Siola, Vele Rupa, Veuga Taviri, Eke Kendi and Bland Tony and Sting Koiri.
Lahari said the squad was the foundation for the next five years as PNG men’s basketball look to revive the glory days.
He added that they were keen to retain one of the top spots within the South Pacific Islands region as one of top basketball playing nations.
The squad will travel under watchful eyes of coaches Ferdinand Daroya and Moses Koiri, and Nick Daroa as team manager.
