Applying good governance in energy sector vital: Blacklock

PNG Power Limited acting managing director Carolyn Blacklock says the application of good governance in the energy sector is important.
Blacklock, during a panel session, said that practising this was important to determine the effectiveness of PNG in achieving its power ambitions.
“You can achieve a lot of things by being honest, and I think with the PNG electrification partnership, if you straighten up and fly right, you will get more money than bad money,” she said.
“And we need to continue to stress that the invisible is highly relevant, and the invisible is making sure that every transaction whether it is by the meter reader or raising money or doing a IPP or salary wages, that every single thing that PNG Power does is setting a new example of good governance.
“And if we are going to solve 70 per cent electrification and to be a sustainable institution and country, we need to really step it up when it comes to good governance.” Richard Robinson, chief executive officer of NiuPower, said there had to be a right policy and strategy in place.
He said it was important to have the right policy to deliver rather than being reactive to whatever the pressure of the day is – a very difficult thing to do in democracies.
