Appoint competent health secretary

Letters

I REFER to The National front page story last Thursday (Jan 16) ‘Top post up for grabs’ regarding the Health Department’s secretary Pascoe Kase whose contract expires on Monday.
In light of so many controversies and issues at the Health Department under his leadership, I believe NEC should appoint a new Health secretary in order to restore the tarnished image of the department.
We see never ending news headlines of official corruption, PAC inquiries, continuous shortage of drugs in hospitals, questionable awarding of pharmaceutical contracts, unnecessary sidelining of good officers, doctors threatening to go on strike, one-man made department restructure done by the secretary, failure to deliver national health plans, failing health indicators, no cancer doctor in the country, worse maternal and infant mortality and the list goes on and on.
NEC needs to appoint a new competent secretary to manage the department whose primary goal is to save the lives of sick people in the country.
Failure to do so will be big letdown by the Government to all the sick patients throughout the country.
