Appointment of UPNG vice-chancellor, council deferred

THE National Executive Council has deferred to next Tuesday the appointment of the University of PNG vice-chancellor and council.
A government source told The National that the NEC could not meet yesterday but would do so next Tuesday.
“Therefore the decision for the appointment of the UPNG council and vice-chancellor has been postponed to next Tuesday when the NEC meets.”
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari intervened last week after UPNG staff and members of the National Academic Staff Association boycotted classes over what they alleged was “political interference” in the appointment of an interim council and a vice-chancellor.
Lupari told the university staff and members of NASA that a council and vice-chancellor would be appointed by the NEC.
The university has resumed lectures. Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Minister Pila Niningi said yesterday the submissions on the potential candidates were ready to be presented to NEC.
