Appointments used to discipline teachers

Letters

THE New Ireland education board has used this year’s secondary school teachers’ appointment as a tool to discipline teachers who had unsubstantiated reports.
A example of this can be seen in the appointment of teachers to Madina Secondary School, the only government female-only school in the country.
The appointment procedure laid out in the Teaching Service Commission Act was ignored, resulting in the appointment of a principal who is yet to be re-admitted by the commission, four teachers without teaching qualification, one promoted to a level 6 position, a primary school teacher appointed and promoted to a level 6 position and an unregistered teacher appointed and promoted to a level 4 position.
All these appointments were made by the provincial education board at the expense of registered teachers who are eligible for positions.
If the policies and the Teaching Service Commission Act has been revisited and changed to cater for such appointment practices, the commission is duty-bound to inform its members.
