THE community from the Arabam and Sunbam wards in Baining, East New Britain, want roads fixed.

Community leader Nick Pius said they had been waiting patiently for the provincial government, the Pomio district administration and the Sinivit local level government to provide a good road.

While prioritising forest conservation in their area as a way to protect their sacred places in the forest and conserve it for future generations, he said there was a need for proper roads.

Pius many of the wards did not have any police officers.

The nearest transport station to the Arabam station is in Dadul ward,  an hour’s walk in good weather but that meant hardship with a load.

The people there, known for their  fire-dancing, pay K14 everyday to get to Kokopo town to sell produce.

Apart from that, they pay an additional K25 per bag of peanut, sweet potato or taro.

About 700 people live in Arabam ward alone.
