Archrivals play for netball gold

NETBALL followers will see the replay of the last PNG Games when defending champions Morobe take on their archrivals National Capital District in the gold decider today at Sir John Guise Indoor Complex.
Tournament director for netball Pole Kassman confirmed last night that Morobe will play NCD while in the bronze medal play-off, Western Fly will take on West New Britain.
An attempt by PNG netball champions Western Fly to defend their title won in Manus during the national championships, could not hold when the PNG Games champions Morobe sent them packing with a 43-27 thrashing in the pool-play offs.
Kassman said the gold medal play-off would be interesting with Morobe goal shooter Nettie Sau, originally from NCD, and her country women take on Sau’s former team.
Commonly known as “baby giant” in the netball circle, Sau will hold the key to victory for Morobe if she can successfully convert all her shot into points.
NCD coach Loi Vele will have to keep her at bay by making sure her team cut off passes made to her.
Kassman said the NCD team were made up of girls from lower division and selected teams in the NCD Grassroots Games which have become a formidable unit and are capable of causing an upset.
Kassman also took the opportunity to thank all netball teams that came to Port Moresby to take part in the PNG Games.
Kassman had high praise for Simbu and noted that there were talents in rural areas which PNG netball and the bigger associations in the country must tap into.
