THE Ela Motors branch in Lae, Morobe, was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money by armed thugs yesterday morning.

General sales manager Allan Baker said six armed men walked into their premises around 10.30am and held up the guards and staff before walking out with the money.

“It happened so fast,” Baker, who was in his office during the robbery, said.

“They were unmasked, had three homemade guns and a factory-made pistol.”

Lae police confirmed the robbery and said investigations were underway.

Metropolitan commander Iven Lakatani said a mobile squad unit on patrol gave chase but only found the vehicle abandoned near the Papuan Compound.

“Initial information I got is that one suspect was caught.

“I am not in a position to give more information on the robbery at this stage,” Lakatani said.

Baker said the robbers made off with some money but declined to state the exact figure.

The money was from sales made yesterday morning.

Baker said fortunately no one was injured during the heist as staff had been warned by the management prior to the incident to cooperate with criminals during robberies and not endanger their lives.

“Police did an excellent job.

“They responded immediately after the robbery,” Baker said.

Security guard Joe Peter, one of four at the branch, said the group executed the heist with confidence.
