A SHOP in Bumayong, Lae, was robbed of K12,000 and store goods last week by armed men, Lae Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban says.
He said a group of men entered the shop and held up the owner and made off with the cash and store goods.
“Police have so far, identified one of the suspects involved in the robbery and have conducted a search several times at his residential area but have not found him,” Chief Insp Kunyanban said.
Police are conducting investigations into the matter and more arrests would be made soon, he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Insp Kunyanban said police have arrested three suspects and recovered 81 tyres in a fraud case where a valueless cheque was used to allegedly steal K161,905 worth of tyres from Dunlop Tyres.
He said those who had bought the tyres from the suspects would also be charged.
Vehicles owners with the stolen tyres were forced to hand them over to police.
Eight arrests have been made so far however, the main suspect is believed to have left the province.
“My concern here is that these criminals reside in a settlement close to Lae city and I have been so vocal about getting rid of this settlement,” Chief Insp Kunyanban said.
He said when people live in settlements and have no job, they were bound to engage in illegal activities and the fraud case was a perfect example.
He appealed to the provincial government to consider removing settlements that were occupying state land in Lae as it would lower the crime rate and allow police to address law and order issues.
