FORTY corporals of the Defence Force engineering battalion at Igam fought their way out of enemy line under heavy fire and explosives at the foot of Atzera Range on Easter Monday.
The soldiers conducted a deliberate attack over the enemies at dawn, returned to their cover, picked up backpacks, ammunitions, water containers and three wounded soldiers then walked 6km to Tanam along the main highway. But it was all part of an exercise aimed to honing skills.
Major Sarufa Eka said the exercise involved administration and practical operational skills.
The last such exercise was held in Lae in 2014.
Senior instructor Lt Justin Panusi, from Goldie River, and two others flew to Lae to help run the nine-week programme.
