i  AM writing in response to Mangi Mosbi’s comments regarding the PNG Defence Force’s involvement in the Pacific Games (The National, July 16).

Apparently, Mangi Mosbi does not understand the roles of the Defence Force so let me shed some light on this matter.

Primarily, the PNGDF exists to protect and defend this nation against all threats, internal or external. Other than that, it provides aid to civil power and participates in nation building among others.

In the case of the SP Games, the PNGDF was called to assist in terms of security. Since this is primarily a task of the police, the PNGDF will only assist wherever necessary.

As such, it is only appropriate for them to remain in the background. So they are basically providing the inner and outer cordon and looking after vital assets and key installations within and outside of Port Moresby city.

They will only move into the sporting arenas when a situation arises and their presence is required.

Otherwise, their presence will only intimidate the crowd and send a wrong signal to our friends about the state of security in PNG.

Mangi Mosbi, I have signed with the army to die for you but only when duty calls.
