The atolls of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will be receiving funding support as a relief from the devastating effects of climate change, thanks to the community of Carterets Island.

Representing the Office of Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), adaptation manager Emajil Ahai delivered the good news recently at the launching of the Carteret’s community resilience building projects.

The office is formerly known as the Office of Climate Change and Development (OCCD).

The launching occurred in the presence of Minister for Community Government and District Affairs Jacob Toke, Member for Atolls and Public Service Minister Raymond Masono and representatives of development partners, key departmental heads from the community government and community development.

The acting Chief Secretary’s representative  Kenneth Nanei was presented on behalf of Paul Kebori to receive the plan.

The community of Carterets completed a climate change and adaptation plan with the assistance and support of the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) and under the coordination of office of climate change.

Information and research started when the office of climate change organised for a project known as the Building Resilience through Climate Change project (BRCC) to visit the Carterets in 2013 to collect information on the area.

From the information gathered, a climate change adaptation and resilience plan was formed and funding was made available.

The funding is known as the BRCC fund and will benefit the people of the atolls area including the Carterets. It will also help other affected areas around PNG.

Ahai said on Jan 15, the Department of Treasury signed an agreement on behalf of the Government for this BRCC funds.

The funding was based on the work provided by the community of Carterets. Ahai said that the office of climate change was working closely with IOM and Bougainville to complete the project.
