THE Police Highway Patrol is a necessary tool to enforce and maintain law and order in Central and must be proactive and responsible, provincial police commander Laimo Asi said.

He emphasised that it was an important and biggest part of the police serving provincial centres during a Central Highway Patrol parade yesterday.

Central is fortunate to have a patrol but it lacked resources, effective coordination and many officers lost interest in the job as a result of private security firms performing their security roles, Asi said.

Incidents in Central occurred often because the Highway Patrol was not frequenting these rural areas, he said.

“It is their responsibility to monitor these areas and ensure that Government services are received by the people,” Asi said.

“A goal of the Government is to have police presence along the highways.

“This includes the LNG project sites.”

Highways include Hiritano, Magi, Sogeri and the LNG project site, Asi said.

Asi assigned two vehicles for the Highway Patrol during the parade.
