K92 Mining Ltd in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands, awarded a five-year contract to a local security firm in Port Moresby last Friday.
Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) mines coordinator, James Norum, said the contract was awarded to Asila Security Ltd.
It was one of three contracts given to landowners by K92 Mining Ltd for trucking, catering and security services.
Chairman of local joint-venture company Bilimoia Development Ltd Neneti Tesai said the engagement of Asila Security Ltd was an initiative of local landowners.
Tesai said Asila Security Ltd would now take over from Kuima Security Ltd, which provided security services to the mine for the past two years.
K92 Mining Ltd executive-director Peter Plessis said he was pleased that the contract was eventually signed.
“It is a first,” he said.
“I am pretty pleased to see that we are starting to move in a better direction.
“We came a long way in negotiations and discussions since the mine came back into production.
“There is a call that we should work together with the locals.
“The company is committed to honour talks, and in the process allow benefits to flow throughout the local communities.”
Asila Security Ltd general-manager Rubi Kolin said the company was not new to Kainantu, having previously been contracted by PNG Power Ltd from 2010-2016.
Kolin said Asila Security was looking forward to working closely with landowners.
“Working in a mining area is very challenging,” he said.
