Association calls for help with drivers’ licence

THE Public Motor Vehicle Association in Port Moresby has called on the Road Traffic Authority to come up with a plan to help public motor vehicle drivers renew their licences.
Association chairman Simon Kunamen said most PMV drivers’ licences had expired.
He said the process of getting a licence renewed in Port Moresby was lengthy and drivers who had obtained their licences in other provinces were still waiting for theirs to be renewed.
He said those drivers faced the risk of being arrested and charged under the Road Traffic Act.
Kunamen said if the drivers were barred from driving, the public transport system in Port Moresby would be affected.
“Given that most people depend on PMVs for transportation, it will cause chaos to workers, students and the general public,” he said.
He said many people in Port Moresby depended on PMVs and the authority should resolve the problem.
“These PMV drivers in Port Moresby were issued licences in other provinces and cannot have it renewed in Port Moresby. A driver who has been issued a licence in Mt Hagen or Lae cannot renew it in Port Moresby,” Kunamen said.
