THE Lae Softball Association (LSA) has welcomed Digicel PNG Limited onboard as a sponsor of its preseason competition.
The mobile operator presented K6,000 to the association to help run its preseason matches.
LSA president Lindsay Pulu said along with the sponsorship package were gift packs which would go a long way to ensuring the association delivered a successful event for its stakeholders.
“With regards to sponsorships, this is a breath of fresh air for our association as sponsorships are very hard to come by with the current economic challenges so the softball community are very grateful for Digicel coming forward to support our sport,” he said.
“The preseason competition sees LSA introducing the Digicel LSA President’s Trophy for both the men’s and women’s competition.”
“These trophies are being introduced for the first time and will become an annual event from 2021 onwards where clubs battle it out for preseason bragging rights.”
Pulu said trophies and prize money would also be awarded to the winners and runners-up.
He said the association was also looking at assisting clubs with some funding but they would need to acquit for the use of the money.
He thanked Digicel for its contribution and invited the telecommunications company to be part of LSA going forward.
He said the Digicel LSA 2021 preseason is set to pitch off on Saturday with a men’s and women’s competition running for a month with the finals pencilled in for Feb 27.
Digicel Lae general manager Shanna Imatana said supporting the association was exciting because of the new brand the company had just launched, the Smiling Face.
She said apart from other sports, softball had struggled over the years but it had done well to maintain its competition and had developed local talent as well as providing Lae residents with an entertaining pastime.
