Five boxing association are set to battle it out at the Bereina Station, Central, over the Independence weekend, says an official.
Joe Aufa, who is the national boxing coach, said the associations confirmed were New Mekeo, Hiri, Kapa, Gulf and the National Capital District.
He said it would be first time for Mekeo to host an Independence boxing challenge, which will coincide with the betel nut festival.
“The event will start on Thursday (tomorrow) and ends on Saturday, with prizes up for grabs,” Aufa said.
He said Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo, pictured, and Central Governor Robert Agarobe would attend the closing ceremony.
Aufa, also a coordinator of the event, said he was expecting male and female boxers to compete in the challenge.
“We are looking at more than 200 boxers coming in for the challenge this weekend,” he said.
“Fighters in each division for both male and female will be identified and selected for the national championship in Port Moresby in December.”
Aufa said technical officials from the Papua New Guinea Boxing Association would attend the challenge as selectors.
