Athletes get ready for Lae meet
The National, Thursday 29th March 2012
ATHLETES in PNG are gearing up for the national track and field championships in Lae over the Easter weekend.
Following the success of the PNG team at the Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia last year, the level of interest is high and a good number of participants are expected from some of the centres on the mainland.
Port Moresby has been staging weekly competitions since early last month and is in the process of finalising its team.
Chimbu, Eastern Highlands, Jiwaka, Lae, Bulolo, Madang, Karkar, Wewak, Kavieng and East New Britain are also sending teams to the championships.
East New Britain has also seen a few local competitions conducted and a small but high quality team will represent the province.
The highlight of the championships is expected to be the men’s 400m with a quality field including Nelson Stone, Kevin Kapmatana and John Rivan.
A range of events will be offered in the under 18 and open divisions with sprint events only for the U16 division. Competition will start on Friday afternoon with heats in the 800m and 400m and the 10,000m events.
Toea Wisil will also be back for the championships before heading to Melbourne for the Australian championships.
To obtain further information call Subul Babo on 7106 6060 or Jacinta Langa on 7129 8432 and provide a fax number or email contact.
Centres must notify Athletics PNG Union of their intentions and send in their entries by April 2.
