Australia’s Defence Force chief Gen David Hurley arrived in Port Moresby to discuses defence cooperation programmes, increase in personnel for both countries and funding.

Hurley is here on his first official visit as the chief of Australia’s forces and will meet with his counterpart Brig-Gen Francis Agwi and Defence Secretary John Porti.

The meeting will focus on how the two countries would work together to ensure a safe and secure region.

Hurley told the media in a press conference yesterday that the defence force ties between the two countries was a long-term relationship.

He said the visit was a good opportunity to discuss issues of common interest.

“We are here just to make sure that we are meeting his (Agwi) needs and that support is provided,” Hurley said.

Gen Hurley will fly to Wewak today.
