The ambassador for women and girls in Australia recently met 13 Papua New Guinean women to discuss qualities needed to overcome challenges and champion positive change in the public service.
During her visit to the country, Dr Sharman Stone met the participants of the Pacific Leadership and Governance Precinct’s future leaders programme and shared her experience of being a member of Australia’s parliament in the past 20 years.
Stone said public servants have to be incorruptible and act with honesty and integrity. “As a public servant, you have to be fearless and expert in your advice to politicians,” she said.
“You’ve got to have respect for the job that you do and for the policies that you implement.
“Your competency is in your hands and your training needs to be life-long.
“You’ll be carrying those characteristics with you – your honesty, integrity, accountability, competency and gender equity principles – and you’ll have a public service that will make the country great.”
