Aussie lawyers on a week’s stint

PNG law firm Posman Kua Aisi Lawyers (PKA) last night hosted a welcome function for a visiting team of lawyers from internationally renowned law firm, Mallesons Stephen Jacques (MSJ) with whom they have an association.
From Australia, Josh Underhill, Zach Meyers and Chloe Johnco of MSJ lawyers arrived for a week’s work attachment.
Their week’s visit to Port Moresby is to work on the PNG civil society organisation (CSO) legal capacity building project.
This is their (MSJ) first joint pro bono project partnership with PKA and CARE Australia.
In a media statement issued late yesterday, PKA announced that this joint project would include the preparation of a legal resource handbook and training materials advising on the legal rights and obligations relevant to CSOs in PNG.
It includes training as well as a legal fact sheet for distribution as part of the training programme.
PKA said at the three Australian lawyers’ welcome function last night that “the focus of their trip was to identify priority areas of law and governance to be addressed, identify the level at which to base the material, consider the form those training materials should take and to seek expressions of interest for potential training participants.
Last night’s function was also an opportunity to give the three visiting lawyers the opportunity to meet various PNG leaders both within the legal fraternity as well as senior government bureaucrats, PKA  said in the statement.
