AN Australian has appeared in court charged with stealing gold worth K44,000.

The court was told that Jeffery Arthur Spurr, 69, from Melbourne,  committed the offence between Dec 1 and 24 last year.

He was alleged to have stolen 295g of gold from a Jacinta Tasi at Vision City in Port Moresby.

Police prosecutor Sgt Michael Awagl told the court that Spurr, who had a similar case pending in the National Court, was on bail when he committed the offence.

He told magistrate Cosmas Bidar that Spurr was in PNG for business.

Spurr was asked to look for a lawyer and was granted bail for K1,000.

His case was adjourned to a later date.
