AS it is important for players to prepare for a grand final, it is also important for the referee to prepare for the game.
Referees play a vital part in every sport that is why Capital Rugby Union referees had a clinic yesterday with Australian Damien Mitchelmore.
Mitchelmore, pictured, has over 24 years of experience controlling state and club matches in Queensland and NSW.
“Similar to players preparing for a grand final, the referees also have to prepare and look at some of the things to go through before game day over the weekend,” Mitchelmore said.
“We basically talk about our passion for the game and how the role of the referee enhances the game.
“We identify certain things that might be happening in the field and what we should be aware of what might happen and how to approach it this weekend.
“Rugby is a physical sport with many rules and the refereeing should be consistent.”
This is the second time for Mitchelmore to come to Papua New Guinea and he said he was excited to be in another environment and be part of an exciting event.
“I would like to thank Capital Rugby Union and its sponsor Pacific Industries for making it possible for me to come and be part of such a special week in the part of the competition.”
CRU match coordinator Pepe Gotaha said the coaching class was helpful and was an eye-opener for him and the other referees.
“It was informative and an eye opener,” Gotaha said.
“We had a clear view of how to interpret certain things on and off the field from a different perspective.”
