A GROUP of year 10 students from a boarding school in Brisbane, Australia, who spent a week in the country have left with many stories to tell.
The six boys and two teachers from the St Joseph’s Nudgee College met children and teachers at the special education schools run by the Callan Services at Wewak in East Sepik, and Aitape in West Sepik.
They arrived in Port Moresby on Sunday. On Tuesday, they travelled the “Coconut Highway” from Wewak to Aitape. It was an experience the boys and their teachers Ken Mitchell and Anthony Connellan enjoyed despite the road condition.
“They call it the Coconut Highway but there are so many river crossings along the way,” Mitchell said.
“The students were here for what is known at Nudgee College immersion – where year 10 students are given an opportunity to experience cultures and environments outside their school and city.”
On their return from Wewak, the group was taken on a tour of the Kokoda Trail at Owers Corner, Bomana War Cemetery and Port Moresby Nature Park.
