Australia and PNG’s sovereignty

Letters

I AM astonished and deeply disappointed by the proposal for Australia and the United States to develop the naval base at Lombrum in Manus.
Please allow common sense to prevail because Papua New Guinea is a sovereign state and therefore any political or bilateral arrangement or agreement should follow proper constitutional processes.
Our colonial taskmaster Australia has been pushing its way in through various political and bilateral arrangements and programmes which undermine PNG’s sovereignty, such as the EPG, the downsizing of the Defence Force, destruction of military weapons and equipment, including the establishment of the asylum processing centre in Manus with the recent push for the development of a US-Australia naval base in Manus.
These show Australia’s lack of respect for Papua New Guinea’s sovereignty.
Australia is a major regional power player within the Pacific, however, it should respect the political autonomy and independence of smaller Pacific Islands, including PNG.
This power tussle between economic super powers like Australia, United States, and China obviously gives a clear indication of their quest for superiority and dominance.
This is a serious national security issue that cannot be undermined nor taken lightly by any legitimate government and may continue to have adverse implications on our vibrant democracy should we continue to ignore such issues of national importance that has the potential to dictate our future.
I therefore call on the Papua New Guinea Government not to open any dialogue with the Australian Government over the establishment of the Australian naval base at Lombrum in Manus.
Australia, as a government, has no right to interfere in PNG’s internal affairs.
Any such political arrangements should be debated on the floor of Parliament and not through other dubious means which may undermine the very democracy we claim to stand upon.
