THREE Australian-based players have been named in the Papua New Guinea Orchids 26-member squad for a historical trial match against the Brisbane Broncos women’s side at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
The trio, who arrived in Port Moresby on Sunday, are former Australian Jillaroo Jenni-Sue Hoepper, former rugby player and powerlifter Tahina Booth, and Therese Aiton, the younger sister of PNG Kumuls’ Paul.
“Jenni is an experienced player, who has played with the Jillaroos,” Orchids coach David Westley said.
“I’ve known her since she was a junior player, so she brings a lot to the team.
“Therese has played for the Jillaroos and Queensland.
“She has a great background in rugby league.
“She plays hooker like her brother Paul.
“She’s a good defender and she’s got a good kicking game.
“For Tahina, she’s a motivational speaker.
“When we were at the World Cup in Sydney last year, she came and gave an inspirational speech.
“The three came into camp and added a lot of value to the side, and the bond between the girls is just fantastic.”
Westley said they only retained five players from last year’s World Cup team due to poor form.
“My focus is also to look at the future,” he said.
“We want a good young side that can really work hard throughout the game and I believe we can do that.”
