Australian universities conduct roadshow on programmes

THE Australia education roadshow continues to provide important information for students in Papua New Guinea to study in Australia, an official says.
Wafi Golpu Joint Venture (WGJV) senior adviser social performance and external affairs and president of Australian Alumni Association (Lae/Morobe chapter) Sheila Harou said the roadshow was important to help Papua New Guineans acquire information to further their studies.
“There are many challenges in the education system in PNG,” she said.
“Our institutions do not have the capacity so some of us went to Australia to further our studies.”
“Australia has always been our partner in education and I hope this programme continues.”
The education roadshow in Lae last Wednesday showcased seven different universities and a college in Australia.
The annual event is organised by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) of the Australian government, to showcase and promote Australian universities and their study programmes.
The institutions exhibited are: Griffith University, Curtin University, Bond University, Australian National University, Murdoch University, University of Sydney and Peace Lutheran College.
Austrade’s senior business development manager Kembol Kaikipae said the roadshow took place in Port Moresby, Rabaul, Lae and Goroka.
Australian Consul-General Paul Murphy, when officially welcoming the education institutions in Lae, encouraged them to engage with PNG.
“It is good to see Australian universities coming to PNG to talk to students and promoting Australian education services to the community here,” he said.
“There is certainly a big skills and training deficit in PNG, and Australian institutions are well suited to provide education and training to help meet the needs of business and to help improve the incomes and lives of Papua New Guineans.”
