THE Samarai-Murua development authority has allocated K3 million for awareness on the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and delivery of relief supplies in their electorate in Milne Bay.
The money is also to set up a vanilla-curing plant and a soccer competition in the remote islands.
Samarai-Murua MP Isi Henry Leonard said the authority allocated the sum for awareness to prepare for festivals.
“The Giniuba (mother pearl) Kaiheya (festival) on Samurai Island in the Bwanabwana local level government (LLG) and Saila, Ulum and Haptomwa festivals in Louisiade LLG is on this week,” he said.
“So my DDA has allocated K92,000 to purchase personal protection equipment (PPEs) such as masks and medication from Saisago Medical Services.
“We have also given about K250,000 to Arrow Medical Services director Dr Eddie Edimani to conduct the Covid-19 awareness in these LLGS.
“Before these events take place, we would like to do awareness and do vaccinations.
“Now we know that vaccination is voluntary so we will not force the people to get vaccinated.”
Dr Edimani will be carrying out medical checkup and assessments on various tropical diseases in the electorate.”
Leonard, who is Tourism Minister, also gave K490,000 to the Roselaw Logistic Company to deliver relief supplies such as food, fuel and water to far-flung Islanders in the Woodlark group in the Murua LLG.
These islands such as the Budibudi Island, is at the maritime border of PNG and the Solomon Islands.
“The company will also deliver material from health, education and other infrastructural projects in the electorate.”
Leonard also gave K370,000 to a Seventh-day Adventist Church-run organisation (Adcare Foundation) to continue their training on vanilla in Bwanabwana, Yeleyamba and Louisiade LLGs.
