THE PNG Tourism Promotion Authority uses the annual World Tourism Day to promote its work so that the people are aware of the importance of the industry, an official says.
Provincial coordination and product development officer Michael Taia said it was a time to show the people what the authority had been doing to promote tourism.
“It is not only us to promote tourism in the country but it’s everybody’s business,” Taia said.
He said tourism was an indirect export industry where tourists brought foreign dollars to the country.
“Just like physical commodities, tourism is an indirect export where lot of foreign dollar into the country and is helping PNG to trade internationally.
“If we want to grow, we have to consider everyone around us, how we can work together, join the network of people.”
The global event is organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation of which more than 200 countries around the world are members of.
“The UNWTO saw the importance of tourism to the global economy and decided to give this status, and in 1980 the first World Tourism Day was observed,” he said.
