Authority suspends betel nut licences ‘temporarily’

BETEL nut and mustard licences will be suspended as of Wednesday (March 4) according to National Capital District City Manager Bernard Kipit.
In a paid advertisement on Friday, Kipit said the suspension of the permits was done until further notice and would affect suppliers from other centres except those from Central and Gulf.
“The management considers this temporary suspension necessary following concerns raised by the public that betel nut and mustard brought into the city on commission issued permits and licences were being sold in public other than the designated and approved wholesale locations,” Kipit said. “Edics Holdings Ltd and its betel nut wholesale facility at Gerehu will be exempted from this temporary suspension and will be allowed to bring in betel nut and mustard from other centres to supplement the supply from Central and Gulf.
“All airlines and shipping industries are also advised to take heed of this notice to help us in our efforts to control the influx of betel nut and mustard into the city.”
Kipit urged the public to comply with the notice and to refrain from any illegal practice that may attract severe penalties.
