THE ROAD Transport Authority (RTA) is ready to work with Port Moresby police to curb minor traffic issues in the city, says chief executive Nelson Terema.
He said this following a call by National Capital District (NCD) Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou to the authority to work with police in enforcing traffic rules in the city.
“Some motorists continue to breach traffic rules such as parking near junctions and roundabouts and ignoring traffic lights,” N’Dranou said.
Terema said the RTA was there to support police as they were already discussing with the 4-Mile traffic police on how they could work together this year to address minor traffic issues.
“I commend the metropolitan superintendent’s call for us to work together as we were also working on plans to improve traffic issues in the city this year,” he said.
“We already had some discussions with the 4-Mile traffic office so it will not be a problem as we support what the NCD metropolitan superintendent said.”
Terema said they were about to recruit new traffic inspectors.
“We will be putting advertisements out soon to recruit new inspectors as we have laid off the ones who were working in the past.”
Terema said they were organising uniforms, logistics and other resources for the inspectors.
“We will be on the road again in early next month to work together with police to address all these minor traffic offences in the city,” he said.
