THE Western Highlands health authority wants people who are willing to get their first dose of vaccine and those due for their second shots to go to the hospital later this week.
Authority acting chief executive officer Jane Holden said the first lot of vaccines expired on Thursday and new stock was expected this week.
She said Western Highlands had received 630 vials initially and due to vaccine hesitancy in the province, the authority offered 388 vials back for redistribution to other provinces with bigger demand.
“We have delivered 169 vials or 1,685 doses of which 415 are second doses,” she said.
“It is likely that we had around 60 vials of expired vaccine on Thursday (July 29) which is not the result we had hoped for.”
She said when looking around the world, people desperate for vaccines, this seemed such a waste.
“We remain very concerned about an outbreak of the Covid-19 Delta variant and wish to remind everyone that the vaccine is the only solution to protect us.”
