Minister for Works and Implementation Francis Awesa presented a cheque for K80,000 to the PNG Stoma Association in Port Moresby yesterday.

The cheque was from a 2013 Queensland Maroons rugby league jersey auctioned for the amount for the PNG Stoma Association by PRK Mendi Muruks during a fundingraising dinner last year.

Awesa had won the jersey through normal bidding.

Awesa commended the PRK Mendi Muruks for helping organise the event for the association that helped and cared for less privileged people in communities.

Founder and president of PNG Stoma Association Janet Yaki appreciated the support from the Awesa and board members of the Muruks.

She said even though the recently established PNG Stoma Association was small, it stood for a good cause under its motto “service for needy”.

“It provides medical supplies to cancer patients and children born with deformity,” she said.

Muruks’ chairman Pastor Isaac Joseph said he was delighted to donate proceeds of the jersey to the association.

Joseph said the Muruks was not a rich team as people saw when they appeared in the media.

“This is not our first time to help PNG Stoma Association but the Muruks team helped rural people and supported community programmes in Mendi, Southern Highlands, as well.

“We gave K2000 to the Mendi Hospital children’s ward for medical kits and another K2000 to church activities run by 36 churches in Mendi.

“The Muruks team distributed Bibles to schools in Mendi and helped clean Mendi town,” he said.
