B’ville keep hopes alive

SEVERAL teams were out today to keep their hopes alive in the elimination round of the touch footy competition for a chance to play in the finals. 
In the women’s division, defending champions Team Bougainville survived a late onslaught by Oro lasses to run away with a 5-4 win.
They have so far won most of their matches except for one against Morobe.
Team Bougainville touch team manager James Semosa said their loss to Morobe was due to the team not being familiar with one of the latest defensive rules.
“However, the team have familiarised themselves with the new rules and have responded outstandingly,” Semosa said.
He added that the women’s team had sprung some surprises by using the rule to their advantage.
The current Bougainville team were the same side who finished runners-up in the national championships in Port Moresby last year.
The team have a strong belief of taking the crown in tomorrow’s matches and will prove a handful to the other teams vying for the top honours.
Bougainville, led by captain Vanessa Hamei, have been outstanding with tries since day one while Charlene Kiroha has been very instrumental, in creating some vital options for the side with her stylish play.
In the medal playoff tomorrow, Morobe will take on Oro while NCD are up against West New Britain in the mixed division.
Morobe have already won a spot for a playoff in the women’s division alongside West New Britain and lanky Bougainville side.
A final washout match is expected to be played tomorrow between Morobe and New Ireland going into the finals playoff.
However, NCD, Oro and East New Britain have already secured spots in finals. It is expected to be a tough and entertaining showdown.
