B’ville wins Karate golds bronze

 By FRANKLIN KOLMATHE Bougainville karate contingent that took part in the 23rd National Championships for the first time over the weekend made history by winning three golds and a bronze medals.

The team, consisting of three fighters and an instructor, shocked 10 other regions that took part by winning gold in the bouts they took part in.

David Wallace, a gold winning instructor and sensei of the Bougainville Karate Dojo, said yesterday he was very proud of his three fighters.

He said Quinton Wallace, who won gold in the 75kg point contact event, proved too fast and accurate for his opponents, using his height and long limbs to full advantage.

Cletus Mason, who won gold in the 60kg division of the same event, proved equally formidable, using his reflexes and timing extensively.

The third fighter Hilary Wasawa, took bronze in the 55kg point contact event, clearly showing that in time he will be a force to be reckoned with. "This was an experience gaining championship for the boys in our preparation for the PNG Games," Wallace said.

But Wallace voiced frustration at the Bougainville government for not supporting the pioneering karate team.

He thanked Alex Sina and Jeffrey Magum, who gave money and thanked Agmark for the shirts, caps and bags.
