THE police top brass will hold officers accountable for their actions and are committed to ending police brutality, Commissioner Tom Kulunga says.

He was responding to complaints against police on alleged human rights abuses.

Last month a video was posted on the internet showing a man being attacked by police dogs.

Kulunga condemned the action and ordered an investigation into the matter.

“The constabulary and its members do not have the powers to arbitrarily hand out punishment on offenders,” he said.

“We operate within the premise that everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Such alleged abuses, either by policemen or in this instance police dogs, will not be tolerated by my management.”

On the reported raiding and looting of a shop in Gerehu during the Easter weekend by officers, he said it went against the very reason why they were wearing police uniforms.

“Our primary objective is to protect life and property and to maintain, and where necessary enforce, the law in an impartial and objective manner,” he said.

“The police management maintains zero tolerance level on abusive, corrupt and unprofessional policemen and policewomen and will take the strongest action available.”
