THE agriculture sector needs good leadership as it is the key to propping up the national economy in the long-run, says Sir Brown Bai.

Sir Brown, the Rural Industries Council  chairman, told a radio talkback show that agriculture would continue to support the  economy into the future – unlike commodities such as gold and gas.  He said decisive action and leadership were needed especially when the Gross Domestic Product growth was slow because of the depressed metal and petroleum prices.

“Let us develop this sector decisively,” he said.

“This is a sustainability sector which will service Papua New Guinea for a very long period of time.”

Sir Brown, also the chairman of Kumul Mineral Holdings, said resources in the mining and petroleum sectors would be depleted.

But agriculture would remain to be the mainstay of the economy.
