Baisu jail gets help to build school for prisoners

Highlands

BAISU jail in Western Highlands will build a high school for the prisoners and children of the surrounding communities.
The provincial government gave the prison a new sawmill and chainsaw to mill timber for the classrooms and teachers’ houses.
The prison is already being served by Baisu Primary School.
Administrator Stanely Maip said Governor Paias Wingti wants to make education accessible to all.
Maip said the government will provide the roofing iron, nails and other building materials. Correctional Services will provide the land and labour.
“We will also provide technical advice to ensure that the project is completed this year,” he said.
He said the province has built and registered 16 new high schools in the past five years, with some schools having already graduated grade 10 students.
Two more high schools will be built, he said.
“It’s a partnership programme where the provincial government helps organisations and communities build their own schools,” Maip said.
Baisu jail commander Timbi Kaugla said the new high school will be used by prisoners who have not completed their high school education.
