Baki: Police cases up
The National, Tuesday February 16th, 2016
THE National Capital District has the highest number of police brutality and corruption cases in the country, Commissioner Gari Baki says.
Baki (pictured) was speaking during the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting last week.
He said the public and business houses must help police officers do their constitutional duties properly.
“I want to impress upon you leaders of business to help keep my policemen straight,” Baki said.
“It does not help when members of the public pay some policemen to arrest or intimidate others.
“It does not help when members of the public pay policemen to do what is their constitution duty.
“Law and order is not just police business.
“It is your business as well.
“Help us to make National Capital District a safe place by not inducing policemen and report any member who does what he or she is not supposed to do.
“In two recent cases which were video-taped and gone viral, all officers involved have been arrested and charged.
(“In the latest video of the “begging policeman”,) he was arrested, charged and locked up.
“All these members will be dismissed from the police force.
“We are committed to making NCD and PNG safe for all people.
“To tackle the law and order problems of the country, you must start with the NCD.
“You get NCD right and the rest of the country will follow suit.
“I have started the process by appointing a very young but experienced and capable team.
“The commander is Assistant Commissioner Sylvester Kalaut, who is assisted by the Metropolitan Superintendent Benjamin Turi.”
