Ban on plastic bags deferred

National

THE total ban on the use of single-use plastic shopping bags will come into force on March 16, according to Minister for Environment and Conservation and Climate Change Wera Mori.
The ban was supposed to come into effect tomorrow.
Mori in a paid advertisement said the Government after consultation with the manufacturers and the importers of single-use plastic shopping bags, had given an extended grace period on the ban by a further 45 days.
He said the extension would allow plastic bags in factories or warehouses, or on the shelves and counters of retailers’ shops to be used. “Any individual or entities found to continue importing, manufacturing or retailing the single-use plastic shopping bags after the prescribed dates, will face the law.”

  • Do not come up with an ultimate dates. Coz this will result to more extension of grace. Just impose control on manufacturing and import until such time you are certain that plastics are all used up. if you impose immediate ban, they will take that up as a loss which will reflect in the financials, thereby reducing the profits and further reducing the tax paid to the country.

  • Well, crooked Mori, you can add another grace period on top of the one given now….
You are simply talking. You will see that even next year and the year after next year….plastic bags will still be in circulation.

  • I thinks Mr. Mori you a totally wrong dont extend the date again because you will keep on extending it come up with one decision and stop it.
