Banab Bridge

Letters

THIS is an urgent plea from the people of Sumkar and Bogia districts to the Madang provincial government and the Sumkar and Bogia MPs for a new bridge at Banab village.
Ever since the collapse of the bridge at Banab, there has been a drastic rise in law-and-order problems.
The lifeline of the people of Sumkar, located on the other side of the fallen bridge, and the entire Bogia district has been cut off.
There is no police presence on the other side of the highway.
As a result there is a rise in homebrew consumption.
Thugs are walking on the main highway and holding up vehicles nearly every day.
Women, young girls and older folks have fallen victims to these acts.
There is constant fighting among youths at the bridge, disrupting people who are using the floating bamboo bridge to get to the other side of the river.
Malala Secondary school has difficulties bringing supplies to the school.
Students attending the school, especially females, are afraid of crossing the river or even be at the bridge when there is no control of law and order.
Works Secretary announced a few months back of a new bridge.
However, to date there is no sign of any work being done.
This is the time for the governor and the two MPs to work together and address this critical issue.
