THE somewhat quiet Banana Block in Goroka came alive last Sunday when the New Century Supermarket-sponsored youth volley ball competition held its grand final.
Thanks to the West Goroka-based grocer that chipped in over K3,000 to run the competition for the youths at the Block.
Out of the eight teams that participated in the competition, Triple X and Wild Cats qualified for the final while Gafuika Sparicc and SP Doggies settled for the third and fourth spots respectively.
Triple X defeated Wild Cats 2-1 to claim the main prize of K500 while the runners-up walked away with K450.
Sparicc won the third-place and K300 after beating Doggies 3-1, the curtain-raiser girls’ game between New Century and Banana Block was won by the Banana Block girls 2-1.
Competition coordinator of the competition Bisop Iarume said it was important to keep the youths occupied at all times and away from negative influences.
He said the games were organised as a trial that had proved very successful.
“We will consider having similar competitions in other settlements in Goroka, it may not be only volleyball but it may be other sporting codes,” Iarume, who is a manager at the New Century, said.
